Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes
Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.
"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.
The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
